The snow queen

crow and bae

The Snow Queen was created in the winter of 2015 for Pendragon Theatre in Saranac Lake, NY. The artistic director was particularly interested in exploring the use of puppets among the production elements. Ultimately, we decided to create an original work that adhered closely to the translations of Hans Christian Andersen’s original text. Adapted by Leslie Dame, directed by Matt Sorensen, puppet design by Matt Sorensen with Leslie Dame and Lucky Cerruti, costumes by Kent Streed, lighting by Bonnie B. Brewer! I had such a ball working on this show! Video by Jim Griebsch, stills by Mary Newman and Burdette Parks, edited by Lucky Cerruti.

The full show video of The Snow Queen at Pendragon Theatre in Saranac Lake, NY from winter 2015, featuring puppets by director and puppet creator Matthew Sorensen. Puppets featured include Crow and Bae. The artistic director was particularly interested in exploring the use of puppets among the production elements. Ultimately, we decided to create an original work that adhered closely to the translations of Hans Christian Andersen’s original text. The story features a talking crow and a talking reindeer named Bae, both of whom were ideal candidates to be cast as puppets. CROW: The crow has a great deal of dialogue, so a hand puppet seemed like the best choice for him. I built his head, wings and body out of polyurethane craft foam, which I covered with layers of fabric. I used real feathers to adorn his wings, which are controlled using wires attached at a handle. The handle doubles as the crow’s feet. BAE: Bae the reindeer guides Gerda, the heroine, to the palace of the Snow Queen. It was important that he was life size, which meant that a body puppet was called for. Since I wanted the reindeer to have a wide range of movement in his legs and neck, I avoided trying to make his mouth move. His legs are jointed PVC pipe covered in fabric and his body, neck and head are polyurethane craft foam and fabric over a skeleton which was built from PEX tubing.
